NEIU-100. ACE The Sciences: Research Community I. 3 Hours.

NEIU-100 creates a research community among student participants in Agua en Comunidades Experimentales (ACE) project through a series of community-building activities, research experiences, academic supports, and social activities. In this course, students participate in activities that introduce research in the fields of water science, create a community of science scholars, and build relationships with faculty mentors. Activities include local field trips, laboratory experiences, and building academic success skills. Only students accepted in the ACE program are eligible to register for the course.
Requirement: By instructor permission only.

NEIU-201. Social Justice Living Learning Community Seminar. 1 Hour.

The Social Justice Living Learning Community Seminar is a 1-credit course restricted in its enrollment to students who have been accepted into the Social Justice Living Learning Community. The course includes leadership training and instruction on an experiential learning project related to a social justice topic of interest. Students will identify a social justice cause and engage in an approved form of activism.

NEIU-225. Social Justice Foundations I: Key Concepts And Issues. 3 Hours.

This interdisciplinary course is restricted to students who have been accepted into NEIU’s Social Justice Leadership Program for new first-time, full-time freshmen and transfer students. This course fulfills the fall course requirement for students in this program. Students study social justice concepts including systemic oppression and privilege and then apply principles of justice to social constructions of identity, including race, gender, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation and gender identity, disability, and nationality. The course is worth 3 credit hours.

NEIU-275. STEM Living Learning Community Seminar. 1 Hour.

The STEM Living Learning Community Seminar is a 1-credit course restricted in its enrollment to students who have been accepted into the STEM Living Learning Community. Students will gain knowledge of the scientific process, explore STEM career pathways, and interact with STEM professionals. Students will participate in activities to identify paid summer internships in STEM-related fields to strengthen their career opportunities. Course instruction will be supplemented with co-curricular activities including monthly campus events and STEM-related outings, such as visiting museum exhibits or local nature preserves, among others.

NEIU-289. Honors Living Learning Community Seminar. 1 Hour.

The Honors Living Learning Community Seminar is limited to Honors Program students accepted to the Honors Living Learning Community. Students will learn about the opportunities and academic requirements of the Honors Program at NEIU, including honors interdisciplinary General Education courses, adapted courses, and the senior project/thesis. Students will also discover how to identify and apply for scholarships, internships, study abroad programs, research opportunities, and leadership and service roles that align with their personal and professional goals. Regular co-curricular activities, including performances, events, and team-building activities, will supplement classroom instruction.

NEIU-300. ACE The Sciences: Research Community II. 3 Hours.

NEIU-300 continues the development of a research community among student participants in the Agua en Comunidades Experimentales (ACE) project. Students will be engaged in a series of community-building activities, research experiences, academic supports, and social activities. Students will participate in activities that apply research methods in the field of water science to create a community of science scholars and build relationships with faculty mentors. Activities include local field trips, laboratory experiences, and building academic success skills. Only students accepted in the ACE program are eligible to register for the course.

Prerequisite: NEIU-100 with a minimum grade of C.

NEIU-301M. Developing A Research Thesis. 1 Hour.

An integrative, collaborative, research-based introduction to the process of thesis writing. Each student conducts a focused search of the literature and prepares a research proposal in response to a specific, identified issue and is introduced to the elements of scholarly writing. Epistemological-and ethical issues of inquiry are explored.

NEIU-302M. College Teaching For TA's. 1 Hour.

A seminar class to introduce students to college teaching skills and prepare them for teaching assistanships. Class discussion, assignments, and activities focus on the theory and practice of teaching and learning at the post-secondary level. Students draw on their own college learning experiences to evaluate instructional techniques and materials for effectiveness and meaning.

NEIU-303. Preparing For Graduate Study. 1 Hour.

This one credit hour course supports the planning and implementation of applying to graduate programs in various disciplines of the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. The course will focus on core competencies of creating admission essays and curriculum vitae, identifying graduate schools and programs, and maximizing standardized test scores.

NEIU-305. Future Teachers Living Learning Community Seminar. 1 Hour.

The Future Teachers Living Learning Community Seminar is a 1-credit course restricted in its enrollment to students who have been accepted into the Future Teachers Living Learning Community. Students must be in their junior or senior years of a teaching-related program in the Goodwin College of Education. The course includes leadership training, professional development and networking opportunities with professionals in the field of education. In addition, team building activities are implemented to encourage a sense of community and to educate students on building community in their future classrooms.<br />Prerequisite: Consent of Instructor.
