For more than 50 years, El Centro has been a cornerstone of access and equity in higher education — rooted in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood and committed to the success of every student who walks through its doors. Founded to expand educational opportunity for the Latinx community, El Centro has grown into a vibrant, full-service academic center welcoming students from all backgrounds, lived experiences, and walks of life.

El Centro understands that students have jobs, families, and responsibilities. That's why we offer evening classes and Saturday programming — so that a college education fits your schedule, not the other way around. Our doors are open when you need us most.

The El Centro Scholars Cohort Program

New to college? The El Centro Scholars Cohort Program is designed with you in mind. This signature first-year experience places students in a structured, supportive cohort — so you never have to navigate college alone. Through a carefully designed curriculum, built-in academic and social supports, and deep connections to the broader NEIU community, Scholars students complete their general education requirements while building the confidence, skills, and relationships they need to succeed long-term.
